ABOUT US
Why Choose
The
Birch House?
We believe this is your soft place to land, where you can share every part of you - not just the bits you show to others, but also those you hesitate to voice.
Every fear, hope, and dream matters here.
In our therapy and counselling, we believe in letting things unfold organically. Life and healing don’t always follow a straight line, and that’s okay. What shows up in our sessions is meant to be there. Sometimes it’s about calling the truth into the room, and other times it’s about gently acknowledging the truth that’s already there, waiting to be seen and heard.
At the Birch House, every part of you is welcome – the light, the dark, and everything in between. Our approach isn’t about ticking boxes or rushing through a process, it’s about creating a space where you can explore, understand, and make choices that lead to a life lived intentionally and on purpose.
Erika Miller
Owner & Clinic Director
M.Ed., R.Psych.
We believe in the transformative power of a deep, empathetic connection to inspire healing and personal growth.

REAL
You don’t have to try so hard here. This is a safe space to share all of the parts of you. We won’t rush - the things that need to show up will show up in their time, allowing you to address them when you are ready.

WHOLE
Every part of you matters. We tend to want to silence the parts of ourselves that we don’t fully understand. By bringing a voice and expression to those areas, you can feel more settled and at peace in your identity.

FREE
There is space for you here - where you can pause and take a breath, you can ask and explore the big questions, without holding back. We guide you to find your path and live intentionally.

OUR APPROACH
How Our Process Works
By understanding the whole you, including all the parts that show up in our sessions, we can create a more personalized and effective treatment plan that provides the tailored support you need.
1. WE HELP YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU NEED
You don’t have to try so hard here. This is a safe space to share all of the parts of you. We won’t rush - the things that need to show up will show up in their time, allowing you to address them when you are ready.
2. WE MOVE FORWARD WITH THE RIGHT TYPE OF THERAPY OR ASSESSMENT
Sometimes, it’s hard to know what you need. Therapy and assessments can go hand in hand, and we will tailor a treatment plan based on what you need more right now. We set goals that we can strive toward adapting and changing along the way.
3. WE TAKE ACTION TOWARD YOUR GOALS
We use various strategies and techniques to help you develop a deeper understanding of your situation and take steps toward achieving your goals. Some of our modalities are designed to be effective in a relatively short amount of time, but we work at your pace, and comfort level.
Stay for a long time or a short time.
You are always welcome at The Birch House.

What is your cancellation policy?
Presently, we require 24 hours notice on business days to cancel your appointment, otherwise you are are required to pay the full cost of the missed appointment for your clinician (between $200-230). For example, if you have an appointment on Tuesday at 11am, we need you to let us know you won’t be able to make it prior to Monday at 11am. If your appointment is on Monday, we require notice on the Friday before that you will be canceling your appointment.
There are three ways to cancel your appointment:
- Call the clinic and speak to an admin
- Sign into your Janeapp profile and cancel your appointment online
- Email our admin at admin@empsychology.com
At the Birch House, our therapists reserve a time just for you! We want to ensure that we can help as many clients as possible, so the notice is required for us to call clients who are on the waitlist for appointments.
The one exception to this policy is in case of emergency, and if this is the case, please telephone us as soon as possible. The therapist determines whether the cancellation constitutes an emergency.
Note: Charges for missed appointments are not covered by third party insurance (e.g., Alberta Blue Cross) or funding providers, therefore the cost will be your personal responsibility.
Are assessments covered by extended benefits?
It depends on your coverage and insurance provider. Please check with your insurance company directly to determine coverage for you and/or your family. In addition, psychological fees may also qualify to be claimed as a medical expense credit on your personal income tax return.
How do I know if I need therapy or an assessment?
Assessments address a specific referral question or concern raised about an individual’s functioning (e.g., does my child have a learning disability? What are my child’s strengths and weaknesses so I can help them? Do I have ADHD? Do I qualify for support under PDD? Is this anxiety or is something else there?). Assessments take between 6-12 hours of time, some of which is spent with the
clinician.
Therapy (or counselling), is the process of gaining more insight and understanding yourself and others to improve relationships, live freely, and find solutions to specific problems. During the first session, your therapist will review consent with you, answer any questions you may have about counselling, and complete an intake of your personal history to help you develop goals and areas of focus in your sessions. Unlike assessment, counselling is not time-limited with a final meeting date. It is ongoing until it is decided that counselling has been completed or support is no longer needed.
